“Tension 15”
Timothy Kendall Edser
10 Oct → 1 Nov 2008
Timothy Kendall Edser’s practice is based on a continuing series of performance installations entitled Tension.
Tension centres around the artist’s body, its mass and the way in which it interacts within the environment in which it is placed. The series of performances become a scientific discovery in which Edser tests the limits of the body and creates new hypotheses about movement and endurance.
Tension explores and challenges traditional ideals of masculine identity. Muscular, lean, chiselled bodies are classical archetypes that were prevalent in ancient Roman and Greek sculpture, leaving a legacy that still informs contemporary culture. It is into this sphere that Edser places his body, challenging people’s perceptions of masculinity through performances of endurance.
Tension 15 was be performed live at West Space, with the documentation later forming the basis of the subsequent exhibition.
Timothy Kendall Edser completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Honours in Fine Arts at the University of Queensland. He has held solo performances and exhibitions in Melbourne and Brisbane as well as participating in group exhibitions throughout Australia as well as in Italy.
