West Space is proud to present Vote Yes – An Aboriginal Thompson Project by Christian Thompson.
Aboriginal Thompson Australia’s MOST Aboriginal artist brings his campaign to the highly politicised art spaces of Melbourne in an attempt to gain the right to make conceptual art for his sisters and brothers across this great brown land. Thompson’s Campaign brings together elements of video, photography and performance as he invites YOU to vote and bring about a conceptual change.
VOTE YES!! GIVE ABORIGINAL PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO MAKE CONCEPTUAL ART!!!!
Christian Thompson was born in South Australia but now lives and works in Melbourne. He recently completed a Masters of Fine Art at RMIT University. Thompson has been represented in a number of group exhibitions in Thailand, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, Canada, France, Itlay, Austria and New Caledonia. He was the first Aboriginal studio artist at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne 2005 – 2007. Thompson is also a freelance writer and curator. He completed a Curatorial internship at ACMI in 2005 and was the Assistant to the Curator for the 2000 Adelaide Biennale of Ausralian Art, Beyond the Pale.
Christian Thompson’s work explores notions of identity, cultural hybridity, and history — often referring to the relationships between these concepts and the environment. Formally trained as a sculptor, Thompson’s multidisciplinary practice engages mediums such as photography, video, sculpture, performance, and sound.
