The Sun as my Witness
Alasdair McLuckie
26 Nov → 18 Dec 2010

The Sun as my Witness explores craft as sacred ritual; a process of creating that produces works just as spiritually functional as they are visually aesthetic. Shape, colour, and ornamentation become religious truths. The objects born out of this craft are essential devices in the transformation of the physical into the spiritual. Presented in this exhibition is two new sculptural works, one for each of these states of being.

Alasdair McLuckie’s practice adopts a meticulous process to explore mythology, mysticism, and ritual. Through drawing, craft, and sculpture, his practice aims to reinvent folklore with strong formalist sensibilities that incorporate mythical creatures and reference psychedelic imagery and 1970’s design. The obsessive attention to detail in his work translates into a dense visually symbolic language that expresses the imagined energies of the cosmos as well as infinite visual possibilities, underscoring the power of art to reveal what is not easy to see.

The Sun as my Witness has been supported by the City of Melbourne.
