The Big Knit is a growing sculpture by Caroline Love comprising of thousands of knitted stitches, by over 60 people. The work celebrates the handmade by embracing individual style, ‘mistakes’, and community interaction.
I began the work in January 2004 when I started to knit in response to my own love of textile and a need to expand my practice using methods that were transportable and communal.
Having finished a drawing degree in 1996, I have continued to draw and see The Big Knit as an ongoing investigation into mark making as a record of time place. The use of lighting and sound for this exhibition provides other avenues for experimentation with recording and documenting ‘histories’ as well as creating atmosphere for the here and now." — Caroline Love
