“Object Quorum”
Madé Spencer and Alice Mathieu
16 May → 14 June 2014
Object Quorum investigates the possibility of removing one’s subjectivity from the act of selecting. Over a period of 28 days, Madé Spencer and Alice Mathieu assemble one collection of objects each, stemming from the same object of unknown origin.
Each day the artists bring a new object to the gallery to add to their collections, leaving it in the foyer to be placed chronologically by West Space staff.
Madé Spencer Castle is an interdisciplinary artist and curator, interested in the shifting values of objects.
Alice Mathieu is a Naarm/Melbourne based artist, curator and writer with a highly collaborative practice that investigates relationships between people and objects. By attempting to remove subjectivity and curatorial control in her exhibition making process, she advocates for more fluid relations between artist/curator and object/artworks.
