Nothing under the sun

Nothing under the sun is an installation of paintings and sound works within a constructed environment that encourages an immersive, durational and sensory engagement with painting.

Scott Miles' work reflects on the condition of the Arctic Circle during winter—a time when the sun stays below the horizon for lengthy periods. It is informed by the experience of reduced optical capacity and explored through an investigation of the nocturne.

The paintings involved in the installation explore the inherent tonal qualities that occur when night meets the reflective, illuminating light of snow. They posit the qualities of light and darkness in a self-reflexive relationship with the facilitation and obstruction of vision. Soundscapes are positioned to further engage aspects of sensory perception and to consider the durational and narrative potential of sound of the still image.

Scott Miles studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and has exhibited throughout Australia since 2006. Recent solo exhibitions include Light falls through, Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne, The problem of a colour wheel, Fehily Contemporary, Melbourne, Countersites, Ryan Renshaw Gallery, Brisbane, and Reasonable Doubt at TCB, Melbourne.
