“Lumped together”
Adam John Cullen
16 Aug → 7 Sept 2013
Adam John Cullen's Lumped together stems from the artists' residency at KUNCI cultural studies center in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2012.
Indonesia, like other developing nations is in a state of constant flux, with rapid urban development, expansion and change. Alongside urban development, there is a shift from traditional social-cultural systems to a more globalized culture; this can be seen in the material objects of everyday use and their placement within daily life. In keeping up with development, man-made materials are used together with natural fibres; plastics sit with stone; hard with soft, smooth with rough. The bringing together of old and new generates a tension between the materials.
Lumped together investigates the physical interaction between multiple elements and the aftereffects of that interaction.
Adam John Cullen is a Naarm/Melbourne based artist who predominantly works with sculpture. His practice stems from a personal narrative, with many of his works referencing places, people and events.
