Music Performance – International Artist Exchange

Join Kim Dellavedova (AUS), Philip Pietruschka (AUS), Ben Wilson (CAN) and Kelly Churko** (CAN) as they develop sound ideas in an exploratory collaboration at West Space (open to the public March 15-18) with an internet exchange of sound files, word play and musical phrases.

Their work will culminate in a performance of new music and sound design under the Melbourne Planetarium at Scienceworks ‘night sky’ dome on March 21st at 8pm.

With the ‘campfire game’ serving as a metaphor for the exchange and transformation of ideas and sounds, the artists' musical ideas have been processed, remixed and regenerated like a single word passed around a campfire circle. Using the internet, digital sound engineering and non-linear production technologies, Telephone is a contemporary take on the musical games of our ancestors.

Kim Dellavedova (AUS) – Kim divides her time between working as a composer, sound designer, installation maker and a performing musician. Recent musical works include: a live sound design for Inland, 45 Downstairs (Melbourne), song writing performances at Bellisimo (Los Angeles), The Orchid Village (Kingston), The Cornish Arms (Melbourne), Lot 19 Sculpture park (Castlemaine State Festival).

Phillip Pietruschka (AUS) – A graduate of RMIT’s Bachelor of Media Arts (Hons) majoring in electro-acoustic composition and sound design. Recent electro-acoustic commissions include sound design works for Liquid Architecture, DeScore 04 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Sydney Opera House Art Gallery on behalf of DLux Media Arts, and Variable Resistance at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Ben Wilson (CAN) – Ben Wilson is a composer, performer, and improvisor of acoustic and electronic music. He has toured Japan and Australia and performed with his electronic free improv group, Broken Record Chamber, at the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (Quebec). A recent octophonic computer music composition of Wilson’s had a world premiere at the 2003 Musica Viva International Festival of Electroacoustic Music in Portugal.

Kelly Churko (CAN) – Kelly Churko was born into a musical family. At an early age, he studied classical piano with his father and toured Canada with the family band playing country music. He later studied piano and music theory before completing the jazz studies program at Vancouver Community College majoring in electric guitar.
