Studied Natures is a suite of projection works resulting from a recent residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, in the Canadian Rockies. Kirsten Bradley’s time within the national park resulted in the creation of a series of simplified parallel natures, which in their creation adhere to a range of systems, patterns and rates of change as found in nature. These principles were used as points of departure to create abstracted worlds, which can be read, either visually or instinctually, as abstracted natural systems. Studied Natures is also a study in perception; an investigation into the possibilities of simulating the unnatural by use of the organic, for what we perceive as natural continues to change.

Kirsten Bradley’s work deals primarily with landscapes – urban, natural, sonic, constructed and imagined. Her current interests are centred in sociological histories of the landscape, and the murky waters between the organic and simulated within our perceptions of nature and wilderness. Working primarily as one-third of the artist collective Cicada, she has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and overseas including projects at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and the Govett-Brewster, Aotearoa, New Zealand. This is her first solo exhibition.
