Paper/Scissors/Rock is a project that uses the simple game of its namesake to explore materiality and the associative connotations of the terms within contemporary arts practice. Twelve Melbourne-based artists have been selected to participate in the project, either self-selecting existing works or creating new works for the occasion of this exhibition. The individual projects will be presented in a series of four triptychs throughout the gallery, which may or may not be definitively related to the individual terms paper, scissors or rock. Indeed, some of the projects may incorporate aspects of all three terms, blurring the definitive hierarchies established within the game. In this way, Paper/Scissors/Rock subsumes the playfulness of the game, while dispensing with the element of competition, creating a project that relies upon the inherent chance within the game and blurring its elements of distinction.

Paper/Scissors/Rock is a West Space Project, developed by the West Space Program Committee.
