Have a Gander

Martin Wilson

12 Mar 2004 - 27 Mar 2004 · West Space · Gallery 2
Opening: Thursday 11 March 2004, 6-8pm

Martin Wilson studied at the Hunter Institute of Technology in Newcastle, and East Sydney Tech, completing in 1994. He works primarily in painting, with projects incorporating mixed media and wool.

Wilson’s works depict portraits, and are a way of re-inventing people and situations, inspired by his interests in history and popular culture. He creates simple contrasts between the respectful and irreverent. The iconic and ironic often become intertwined in a serious representation. The interplay between the subjects, geese and industrial equipment, plays a scenario of modern living. The geese are oblivious to the mechanics of the everyday, they are a symbol of relief from the complexities and necessities of contemporary culture. This juxtaposition of the ‘unlike’ parallels the use of materials – sheers gloss, a luscious finish, against a natural and raw MDF surface.
