ffiXXed: Surviving sustainability: __________

Incorporating State of Design (16–24 July) and Melbourne Central’s Two Blocks Festival (19 July – 1 August)

As part of this year’s State of Design festival ffiXXed present Surviving sustainability:______________ a project that brings together a range of responses to the often problematic notion of sustainable lifestyle. The project takes place between ffiXXed studios Shenzhen, Y3K gallery in Fitzroy and the West Wing space, with a third component taking place later at Kapok gallery in Hong Kong.

The West Wing will operate as a multifunctional ffiXXed office/ studio/ showroom/ workshop through which a curated group of Melbourne-based creative practitioners to will work. Over the course of the project Sibling architecture will work together with Condiment magazine in the space to build a self-contained kitchen utilising sustainable design elements. World Food Books, a mobile retail space specializing in new and previously unavailable contemporary art journals, editions and periodicals with a focus on contemporary global dialogue, will be present. The space itself will be transformed through an experimental interior design collaboration between ffiXXed and James Deutsher. The space is also open to more spontaneous activities and events.

Open hours: Surviving sustainability:__________ will operate and is open to the public during designated working hours. A program of activates and scheduled opening hours will be available from the West Space website and from ffiXXed.com. An opening event will be held toward the end of the project.

ffiXXed is a collaborative art and design project initiated by Australian artists/designers Kain Picken and Fiona Lau. Together they produce a bi-seasonal prêt a porter fashion label, as well as participating in art and design exhibitions, curatorial projects and other collaborative activities. They have worked between studio spaces in Berlin, Hong Kong, New York and are currently based in Shenzhen, China, where they have recently established an in-house production studio.
