Elastic Field

Leah Heiss

28 Oct 2005 - 12 Nov 2005 · West Space · Gallery 1
Opening: Thursday 27 October 2005, 6-8pm

Elastic Field is a body of work that experiments with the expansion of traditional notions of space through the development of electronically enhanced garments. The garments, when functional, allow for a peripheral layer of information to enhance our experience of the world. When at rest, they are delightful transparent objects with tangible wire skeletons. These delicate artefacts conjure a ghostlike presence of past experiences. The exhibition will comprise garments, electronic photographic studies and sculptural elements.

Leah Heiss‘ practice hovers between art and design – utilising advanced technologies to develop potent human scale projects. She is a designer, lecturer and scholar whose projects operate at the nexus of electronic engineering, fashion design and spatial investigation. While her background meshes communication theory and spatial investigation, her current work investigates how electronically enhanced garments may facilitate an enhanced sense of empathy between remotely located individuals.
