What is the Cover Girl doing there? She provides an entry point into the content of the magazine; she gives a taste for what is to come. Books are often described using nouns normally associated with the human body; the spine, the dust jacket, thus, the cover girl could be called the orifice of the book. Do they all function in the same way? Like the clowns in a fairground, the cover girl always provides the same service: she invites us to practise our aim.

Alex Martinis Roe is a current candidate for a Masters of Fine Arts by Research from Monash University having been awarded the Silver Jubilee Scholarship.
