The natural kind of the title is a spiny thing. Simple parts are assembled into an object which is whole and indivisible. Orderly accumulation appears as pattern. These objects have come from thinking about variation and type but also purpose, definitions and interpretation. We collapse our knowledge of the ends of things into our explanation of their beginnings.
